Swiss Government Scholarships 2023

The Swiss Federation annually awards Swiss Government Scholarships to encourage international exchange and research collaboration between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) nominates the candidates.

Fresh international researchers with a master’s degree or Ph.D. and worldwide artists with a bachelor’s degree can avail themselves of Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships.

Types of scholarship

  • Post-graduate researchers can apply for the scholarship in any discipline (who at least had a master’s degree) who wanted to undergo education or conduct research in Switzerland (research fellowship, Ph.D., Postdoc).

All Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, two federal institutes of technology, and four research institutes enjoy the scholarship opportunities. Applicants are to be selected by an academic mentor at any of these higher education institutions.

  • Art scholarships are available to art students looking for a reasonable master’s degree in Switzerland (arts).

Swiss conservatories and universities of the arts provide multiple art scholarships. Eligible for this scholarship is restricted to some countries.

Eligibility:

  • The candidate must possess a bachelor’s or master’s degree at the time of scholarship commencement.
  • The candidate has to provide proof of his academic capability and distinctions.
  • Contact them if you are concerned about researching at this institution or under the supervision of a professor. To determine whether you qualify for admission, universities may require supplementary information and set certain additional conditions.
  • The candidate must be below 35 years of age (D.O.B should be after 1 January 1978).
  • To get a complete advantage of Swiss education, the candidate must be proficient in the language of instruction (French, Italian, German, or English).

Selection basis

The Swiss diplomatic representation or the related national authorities first make an initial selection of applications. Then, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) makes the final decision.

Scholarship applications are evaluated on the basis of the following three criteria:

  • Candidate profile
  • Value of the research project or artistic work
  • Potential for future research cooperation

Academic and scientific brilliance governs scholarship awards.

The scholarship nominees for the 2023-24 academic year will be announced by the FCS by the end of May 2023. Online scholarship applications will be open from August 2023 onwards.
